Building a relationship with the Mayor’s office.
3 months ago, the Mayor didn’t know who we were. Now his office is working with us on three initiatives (education, homelessness services, and budget analysis), and have made a commitment to meet with him directly in the spring, thanks to Joel Zuniga, Katie McHugh, Michael Ellsworth, Aaron Bowen and everyone who worked hard on the sleepout and campaign launch outside his office.
Health Services for City College Students.
18 months of work is coming to fruition. We have a commitment to link students at all City Colleges to free health referral services. Special thanks to Jason Bense, Kamaria Porter, and especially Amy Totsch for keeping this effort going.
Immigration Services for City College Students.
We also have a commitment that the CCC will distribute info pamphlets to undocumented students about their rights and opportunities for financial aid. Nice work to the immigration team who put this together back in the summer of ’05 ( Erika Gomez, Celine Janelle, Alheli Herrera, and others).
$34 Million in Financial Aid.
Again, your hard work paid off. 3 lobby trips to Springfield, countless meetings with legislators and gubernatorial staff, and we won back all of the money (and then some) that was cut 3 years ago for low and middle income students trying to go to college. Everyone has worked on this at some point, but we owe special thanks to Rene Delgado, Ayinde Jean-Baptiste, and the current Students Rights Team – Brian Ballantine, Priscilla Murphy, Don Thomas, and Amy Totsch!
Youth-Police Collaboration on the West Side.
The 10th District Commander just committed to inviting youth and youth services agencies to provide roll call trainings to officers in Lawndale. Congratulations to Pastor Phil Jackson and everyone who has contributed to the police campaign – John Howard and students from Excel, Josephinum, and Ada S. McKinley.
School Funding Reform Campaign.
We are last in school funding equality in the U.S. We decided that youth and teachers need to lead the effort to correct this. And thanks to the work of our School Funding Reform team, they will. We have written a curriculum to teach students and teachers about the situation and what they can do. Andy Gehl, Aggie Stanczak, Brandon Johnson, Libby Anthrayose, Jenn Ryan – this came about because of your commitment and research. Special acknowledgment to Annie Dickerson and Don Fraynd for authoring the final document.
Launch of City Budget Investigation.
August 22nd, we are launching our investigation of the city budget. Partnered with the highly-respected Center for Tax and Budget Accountability, we are holding the city to account on young adult spending, the budget-vetting process, egregious examples of budget inefficiency, and the long-term sustainability of the current revenues and expenses. Special thanks to Matt Wetstein, Katie McHugh, Fadi Farhan, Ayinde Jean-Baptiste, and others for negotiating this one-of-a-kind partnership.
